With the development of mobile phone market, display manufacturers constantly develop new touchscreen solutions to offer customers thinner and brighter displays. In recent years, we have seen a surge in adoption of touchscreen by smartphones and tablets. The types of touch technology of cell phone screen are in-cell, on-cell and out cell which includes OGS, G+G & G+F. Here we will focus on in-cell and on-cell.
Types | Technical Details | Major Manufacturers |
Out-Cell | GG | SLC, GoWorld, Tianma, BOE |
GF | O-Film, Tianma, BOE | |
OGS | SLC | |
On-Cell | On-Cell OLS | a-Si |
OLED | Samsung | |
In-Cell | Apple's | JDI, LG, Sharp |
Hybrid | JDI | |
LG's | LG | |

We simply see the phone screen only has protective outer glass, touchscreen layer, LCD panel. The structures of in-cell and on-cell are similar, under the two touchscreen solutions, there is a protective glass on the top to protect touchscreen and LCD pannel. The obvious difference is that in-cell is to make touchscreen layer built-in to LCD pannel, while on-cell is to make touchscreen layer on LCD. Due to different touch technology, in-cell phone sceen is more thinner than on-cell.
