According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg News, Apple may be planning to introduce custom MicroLED displays on iPhone, iPad and Mac, after the technology is currently scheduled to debut in a new version of the Apple Watch Ultra in late 2024.

MicroLED refers to "micro light-emitting diode", which is smaller than MiniLED. MicroLED also does not require backlight modules and optical filters. It uses inorganic materials to form the light-emitting layer, so it is not easy to cause the common screen burning problem on OLED. At the same time, the screen transmittance is better than LCD and OLED, and it can also save more power.

Micro LED is to solder micro light-emitting diodes to TFT substrates. The size of each Micro LED is less than 30 nanometers, which is equivalent to 2.07 million pixels in a 1080p screen, and 8.29 million pixels in a 4K screen.

In the latest issue of the Power On Newsletter, Gurman said Apple has spent about six years developing MicroLED technology, which would become the first display customized by Apple. Earlier this week, Gurman also said that Apple plans to introduce the technology to the new Apple Watch Ultra in 2024. He now adds that if all goes according to plan, Apple will expand MicroLED display to iPhone, iPad and other product lines in the next few years.

It is reported that Apple launched the Micro LED project code-named T159 around 2017, aiming to bring products with higher brightness, more vivid colors and wider viewing angles, making the image look more attractive. And it will replace the panels provided by Samsung, LG and other companies currently in use.

The advantages of MicroLED are high brightness, high contrast, high definition, high reliability, fast response time, more energy saving, and lower power consumption than LCD and OLED. It also uses self-luminous display technology, but the brightness of Micro LED is 30% higher than that of OLED. Therefore, if Micro LED is applied to iPhone, iPad and other products, it will bring consumers a better experience.
